Research on media education claims that since youth access all forms of media via Internet and digital platforms and since the global media environment and the reality of increased interaction with media is changing promptly, media education and critical social media literacy are essential. Being critical media literate help students and youth to make better choices on deciding on how, which and what media to consume. Thus, youth should understand better social, economic and political aspects of technology and social media, in order to understand better the consequences and effects that might be developed when using technology and social media as well as the economic and political structures that provide them with the news and entertainment.
However, the interest on thesis topic has started when working as a teacher and noticed how youth are facing various challenges in their daily use of the Internet and digital media, especially social media and its content, its representation as well as other challenges and effects. Hence, the interest on thesis topic has evolved when studying media management, critical management, media technology and by conducting a literature review on thesis topic.
A literature review as a research method is used for this thesis and the research process for this study was developed based on a five tasks model. So, the research was conducted based on the literature review on the topics of media education, critical and social theory and critical media literacy as well as on social media effects on youth, where different research findings and approaches are presented and discussed. There were two main research questions that are relevant for the research, firstly to analyse the effects of social media usage, and, secondly, to analyse what kind of media literacy can address these effects. The result is that social media is based on media literacy but further research is needed on the conceptualization between critical social media literacy and traditional media literacy. Thus, it can be recommended that further studies and investigation should be conducted on recent critical social media literacy and in a more specific and narrow research approach in order to obtain better and more accurate research results.
