Niiden haasteena on tunnettavuuden lisääminen. Siksi tässä toiminnallisessa opinnäytetyössä on tavoitteena nostaa esille Pohjois-Karjalan biosfäärialueen erilaisia kohteita, joiden avulla tuodaan esiin, miksi biosfäärialue on juuri Pohjois-Karjalassa. Tähän opinnäytetyöhön kohteiden yhdeksi esittämistavaksi on valittu teemakartat, joita tehdään tämän työn aikana. Opinnäytetyön toimeksiantajana toimii Pohjois-Karjalan elinkeino-, liikenne- ja ympäristökeskus. Kohteet valittiin karttoihin kahden ennakkoaineiston perusteella, joista ensimmäinen toteutettiin kyselyillä ja toinen erillisenä kohteiden etsinnällä. Opinnäytetyön lopuksi teetettiin toinen kysely, jonka tarkoituksena oli saada biosfäärialueen toimijoiden mielipiteet ja muokkausehdotukset kartoista. Karttoja muokattiin kyselytutkimuksen tulosten perusteella. Abstract: Biosphere reserves are not widely known in the world or in Finland. Their challenge is to bring more knowledge about the biosphere reserves to people. Therefore, this aim of this thesis is to bring out the different sites of the biosphere reserve in North Karelia and to show why North Karelia has a biosphere reserve. The idea of Biosphere Reserves is to develop interaction between man and nature in accordance with sustainable development. This thesis represents the targets with a thematic map, which were produced during the work. The thesis was commissioned by North Karelia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. The targets were chosen on the basis of two sets of data, the first of which was made on the basis of survey and the second one is with a separate target search. At the end of this thesis, a second survey was conducted, which was answered by biosphere reserve operators. This idea of this survey was to get the biosphere reserve operators’ opinion about the thematic maps. Based on their opinions, the maps were revised. In this thesis, a total of seven different maps were produced. Those map themes were cultural sites, partners, villages, major events, local specialties and hiking trails. Ready-made thematic maps will be published on the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve website.
