In an era marked by war, violence, and environmental threats, the apocalypse is increasingly used as an allegory. This theme has flourished within both art and popular culture to the extent that even individuals without a religious background recognize its figures, symbols, and history.
This paper explores the artistic expression of the apocalypse and its role in reflecting humanity’s fantasies, fears, and traumas. The study traces the evolution of the apocalypse throughout art history and highlights how the theme has served as a tool for artists to contemplate contemporary societal issues and initiate a dialogue on existential and ethical questions.
The images in “Endtime Fantasies” originate from existential questions and portray the modern apocalypse. As in all apocalyptic narratives, fears and hopes are intertwined in a narrative shaped by combining fantasy with reality. “Endtime Fantasies” constitutes a series of photomontages depicting the contemporary apocalypse by merging images from the artist’s surroundings, international media, and symbols from secular and religious apocalyptic narratives. Special emphasis is placed on the Book of Revelation and the duality of the apocalypse between good and evil. This duality is visually expressed in various ways and has been inspired by both pictorialism and dadaism.
