The aim of the thesis was to examine Karelian mythology and tradition, to study to what extent Karelian mythology is currently utilized in tourism in North-Karelia, and to consider the potential of Karelian mythology and traditions as regional attraction factors for tourism. The thesis did not have a client but was based on the author’s personal interest in the topic, and the rising interest around the topic, after the theme got more visibility by the Kalevala project carried out in 2020–2022.
The thesis was carried out as a literature based research. With regard to Karelian mythology and traditions, the knowledge base was primarily built on literature and research in the field. The current use of mythology in tourism services in North-Karelia was explored by studying the offering of tourism services through the VisitKarelia.fi website and by making a query for a North-Karelian entrepreneur who utilises Karelian mythology and tradition in her own operations.
The used sources emphasised the significance of the built and existing environment and milieu forming a traditional atmosphere, which is particularly important in the case of cultural heritage entrepreneurship. Modern people’s interest and longing for their own roots and the history and tradition of their own family and culture were also clearly visible in the sources used in the thesis.
