During the last two decades, the Baltic Sea has become an important transit route for vessels importing and exporting products within Europe and throughout the world. With the seriousness of ship emissions affecting people's lives daily, more and more emphasis has been paid to air pollution issues, specifically ship emissions and countermeasures.
This thesis seeks to completely explore the standards of organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other regulatory agencies. It specifically focuses on conventions, regulations, laws, and normative international documents. The thesis addresses the harmful effects and the development principles of exhaust pollutants, such as greenhouse gases (GHG), carbon oxides (COx), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) from ships. It also highlights the current situation and assesses ship emission inventories in the Baltic Sea.
The objective is to raise awareness about marine exhaust gas pollution in the Baltic Sea, especially as the industry endeavors to transition to more environmentally friendly shipping practices. The challenges during the thesis revolved around reviewing diverse materials from all Baltic countries and selecting relevant ones for inclusion.
The potential for further reduction lies in adopting more efficient technological innovations, such as reducing sulfur content in fuel, enhancing engine performance, and implementing exhaust gas reduction technology.
