This thesis explores the connection between skin health and Quality of Life (QoL), focusing on people’s perceptions. Skin is the body’s largest and most visible organ; skin health plays a crucial role in various functions. The thesis delves into different skin health aspects, including skin conditions, disorders, and cosmetic concerns. QoL is a multidimensional concept encompassing physical, social, and psychological well-being. The thesis investigates how skin health influences each aspect of individuals’ lives and how to improve it. It is targeted to healthcare professionals.
The thesis was conducted with a narrative literature review, searching, and evaluating data through thematic analysis. Altogether 13 scientific articles were selected for the thesis. Collaboration with a private healthcare clinic makes the research findings relevant to healthcare professionals. Furthermore, the aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between skin health and quality of life, as perceived by patients. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the impact of skin health on individuals’ overall quality of life by synthesizing recent literature and studies. Additionally, the aim is to link the findings to practical applications, with the potential to develop healthcare clinic services towards a more patient-centered approach.
According to the results, skin disorders are associated with physical discomfort, pain, and sleep disturbances. Comorbidities, like sleep deprivation and other chronic illnesses, can further exacerbate these issues. Individuals with skin conditions often experience heightened levels of anxiety and depression. Appearance-related concerns significantly affect their psychological well-being. Social interactions become strained as individuals with skin conditions deal with embarrassment and stigma. Sociodemographic factors play roles in how skin conditions affect QoL. Females and younger adults tend to experience a more profound impact.
In conclusion, this review highlights that skin conditions substantially and multifacetedly impact individuals' QoL, affecting their physical, psychological, and social well-being, often overlapping ways. It calls for enhanced awareness of skin health, increased support services, and improved access to resources for individuals living with dermatological issues.
