This thesis is about foster care that is given by child protection. The aim of the thesis wasto research foster parents’ experiences of being a foster parent and to find out what it is that motivates them in their assignment as foster parents. We also researched what foster parents think is important for shaping a safe and good environment for a foster child.
In the theoretical part of this study, we describe subjects around the term foster care, previous studies on the subject and theories about motivation. We describe internal- and external motivation and Maslows hierarchy of needs. We describe the process of becoming a foster parent and the rights and responsibilities that foster parents have. We explain the causes of replacement and what a safe and good environment is.
In our study we did four qualitative semistructured interviews and qualitative content analysis was chosen as the analysis method. The criterium for selection was foster parents who had had a child or several foster children in the family for a couple of years. In the result analysis it appears that the mission as foster parent is very giving but also very strenuous. In the interviews with the foster parents they talk about positive aspects but also a lot about the challenges in their daily lives. The motivation to being a foster parent comes mostly from a longing for more children in the family, from the feeling that they had more to give and from the will to help someone in need. All of the respondents had a background of being a support family which affected their choice of becoming a foster parent.
