This thesis is a part of Novia University of Applied Sciences’ project Skolcoach: förebyggande arbete i skolan (The School Coach Project). The project aims at creating physical tools for school coaches in Finnish Swedish schools, where the tool should support school coaches in their work. The sleep related tool is based on the need of school coaches in Eastern Uusimaa.
This thesis was implemented as a functional thesis, and the method used is Service Design. The aim of the thesis is to create a solution-oriented tool, where the purpose is to promote adolescents’ positive sleeping habits and prevent sleeping problems. The tool aims to support interaction between the school coach and pupils, but also help them identify their resources. The tool Ta tag i din sömn consist of sleep-related cards, a planning- and follow up form, and instructions. The tool is based on the Empowerment theory. In this thesis the following question was used: Is the tool useful in the school coach’s work?
It can be assumed that sleeping problems is a growing issue among adolescents, therefore it is important to promote good sleep. Adolescents in the age of 13 to 19 has been the focus of the thesis, and the tool can be used with pupils in grades 7 to 9, and possibly with students in upper secondary schools. The testing consisted of four loops in total and based on the feedback the tool was developed. Three tests were done by a school coach on a group level in grades 7 to 9 as a part of their work. The fourth test was done by the authors on an individual level with two students in upper secondary school. The final product of the tool can be useful in school coaches’ work.
