The primary objective of this thesis is to analyze and conceptualize the principles behind the dialogical and group-oriented work methods, and to study their potential for supporting shared authorship, polyphonicality, and experience of collective ownership in teaching theatre arts.
The study consists of a knowledge base dealing with art democratization and dialogical theatre methods as well as a case study implemented with a student group in an open college. The theoretical framework elaborates on the critics of autocratic auteur, the fall of text- and director-oriented tradition, and yet methods of group- and process-oriented theatre. In this context dialogicality is proposed as a conception of both art and human being as well as concrete work method, which supports objectives of polyphonicality , shared authorship, and collective ownership.
The case study leans on a data collected from a survey and a group interview. The knowledge base is founded on the thinking of philosopher such as Mihail Bahtin, Martin Buber and Paulo Freire, and addedly it leans on the conceptions of dialogical aesthetics and theatre praxis rising from contemporary studies of art pedagogy. The conclusions propose that dialogical work methods advance shared authorship as well as collective ownership in a group process of theatre.
As an end result, I have composed a model of dialogical group process of theatre, whereby I am tending to perceive the factors of dialogical and democratic work method, seeing from a viewpoint of a director or a teacher. The model is a concrete tool for a theatre arts teacher, and hopefully it can benefit also, for example, facilitators working in the field of applied and community theatre.
