The purpose of this thesis was to describe how a nurse with the right to prescribe medicine and the Master of Health Care degree can use her informative and skilled competence at work. The objective of this thesis was to find out what kind of possibilities this Master’s degree programme can offer to the work description and how the competence could be utilized even better.
This thesis was a quantitative study. The material was collected by Webropol survey. Nurses with both the right to prescribe medicine, the education of Master of Health Care and membership of either Kliiniset asiantuntijat YAMK - KLIAS Ry or the section of Tehy nurse prescriptioners were asked to answer the survey. The material collected by survey was analysed by Webropol statistics tools. Answers to the open questions were grouped by their substance contents with Webropol text mining.
The results show that a nurse with the right to prescribe medicine and the education of Master of Health Care can use her competence best in instant advanced practise nursing, patient counselling and personnel education. Instead, the nurse was less able to utilise her competence in research and development or expertise management at work.
The benefits of nurses’ right to prescribe medicine and Master of Health Care educations to the patients included the increase in patient satisfaction, a more comprehensive care and a faster admittance into care. Also, the nurses enjoyed various benefits for their increased competence. They were more pleased with their work and their work effort was utilized more effectively. The results of this thesis show that supervisors need more information on the competence of nurses who are Masters of Health Care with the right to prescribe medicine.
