This thesis was commissioned by Poijukodit Oy, a company which provides a special level of foster care. The thesis discusses young people growing up in foster care, as well as the challenges of becoming independent. An important goal was the development of support. Poijukodit Oy has not previously had any material of their own that supports the process of youth becoming independent. The objective of the thesis was to produce a material bank that meets the needs of employees and youth in foster care.
The theoretical framework of this thesis was divided into two parts. It covers the concepts of child welfare and youth. Child welfare as a whole is handled through documents that guide it. The terms foster care and after care are also explained. Adolescence is presented as a period of time set in between childhood and adulthood. It is examined in the framework through developmental tasks and crises, among other things.
As methods in this thesis, a survey and brainstorming were used to study the viewpoint of foster care employees. The opinions of young people, on the other hand, were examined using a theme interview. The survey was used to examine employees’ views on the challenges of young people becoming independent in foster care, as well as their wishes in relation to the material bank. Brainstorming was used to further developed the data generated in the survey. The purpose of the theme interview was to find out the experiences and opinions of young people when it comes to independence at Poijukodit Oy.
It was revealed that the general lack of knowledge and skills when it comes to independence were a large concern in the employees’ opinion. Also, young peoples’ problems with motivation and mental health were mentioned as hazards in terms of successful independence. Based on the theme interview, youth need space to do things independently in foster care. What brought up most concern was learning official affairs, such as finances.
As the output of the work, the material bank was created in digital form. Its content can be used by foster care employees to support youth becoming independent. The material bank includes information packages on various aspects of independence, as well as tips for employees and exercises to perform with young people. The material bank is supposed to be only the first version of a continuously evolving tool.
