The purpose of this thesis was to enable the development of home care in a more customer-oriented direction. The aim of the study was to find out the employee’s ideas about customer-oriented work, what it means to the employee and whether is comes true customer-oriented work in practical work in home care. Employees evaluate that there are areas for development in customer-oriented work in the areas of home visits, self-care and teamwork. Research results customer-oriented assessment was found to be feasible, but not sufficient often. Employees implement customer-oriented work with a rehabilitative approach, observing and involving the client in the performance of daily activities. The results also showed the need for networking between different actors as well long-term development of cooperation. Customer segmentation can be used to define customer groups with similar service needs and different areas of operational capacity can rank in different customer segments. This would help target employees skills and resources properly and the employee`s willingness to work.
In the future, home care development work must pay attention to improving efficiency in the operation, by regular evaluation of accustomed working practices. For further research developing customer segmentation as well as multi-professional teamwork could be implemented, to achieve a more customer-oriented way of working. The results could be use in the development work of the home care.
