Asiasanat: ammatti-identiteetti, diakoni, diakonia, narratiivisuus, tarinallisuus
The purpose of this thesis was to find out how deacon workers perceive the development of their own professional identity and what special talents or skills are needed in addition to education. Further, how the choice of profession has been influenced by the person’s own life history or roots; and how the childhood home and environment, the home atmosphere and the upbringing has influenced on the choice of a profession. Could the ecclesiastical profession be the heritage of family or could deacon be the profession changer?
The theoretical part of this thesis dealt with the formation of identity and professional identity, diaconal work and narrative. The data was collected by a written request for diaconal workers’ autobiographical stories. The request was published in a member letter of the Diaconal Workers' Union. Thirteen life-like stories were obtained as a material for this thesis. This study was done by using narrative research methods, which is one way to conduct qualitative research. The analysis was based on reading and interpreting the stories.
It can be concluded that deacons can grow from many backgrounds, even by changing a profession. When choosing a profession, the upbringing and values of the childhood home had a significant influence. Each story was conveyed by the meaning of the role models, vocation and spirituality. As a deacon worker, there is a need for a wide range of skills and there is no single way to do the job, although the starting point for it is faith, hope, charity and neighbour love.
Keywords: professional identity, deacon, social work of the church, narrative
