Advertising is always present, though people are not aware of it. Advertising is shown on television, published in newspapers, in the media, on the internet, etc. Small children don’t often understand the meaning of an advertisement, and even bigger children sometimes have difficulty understanding the content of advertisements. What marks the abuse of advertising aimed at children is mainly the fact that they use children's naivety to sell a product or a service. Because most children believe in what they see and hear, they also believe that the product or service advertised will give them the advantage and pleasure that the advertisement promises.
The purpose of the paper is to study through a literature review how rules and guidelines in different countries around the world have on advertising aimed at children and how they differ from one another. The method chosen in the study is qualitative because articles and literature are interpreted and summarized. In the study, I chose to compare the laws of five different countries regarding advertising aimed at children. These countries are Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, the United States and Canada. I chose these countries because of the basic facts I have about the countries' legislation in different areas differ dramatically. The results showed that all these countries, except Switzerland, had clear guidelines on how advertisements is directed to children on different platforms. Although all these countries have regulations, there is a major problem in digitization. It is difficult to monitor what children can see on the internet because of the easy access to the internet via, among other things, the mobile phone. Despite these regulations, it is ultimately the parents’ responsibility to review how much the child is exposed to advertising.
