This thesis relates to project based learning for police students as well as evaluation of a recruitment event at the Swedish speaking brigade in Dragsvik, Ekenäs. The purpose of utilizing project based learning was to encourage critical thinking as well as self-reflection as part of the learning process. The primary goal for this thesis was to utilize project based learning for police students by them participating in the planning, executing and evaluation phase of the recruitment event. The secondary goal was evaluation of the recruitment event in itself, with regards to the interest that the event had spurred in the recruits in relation to studies at the Police University College.
The project based learning encourages the students to take responsibility for their learning process and during the project the students were requested to document their learnings and reflections in a learning diary. The role of the teacher was to define and communicate specific goals as well as continuous monitoring of progress. During the planning phase of the recruitment event the police students were requested to reflect upon the main influencing factors for why they applied to the Police University College. This as well as critical reflections upon the recruitment event will encourage planning of future events.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the recruitment event a survey, consisting of five questions, was conducted at the recruitment event in December 2015. The survey reveals that a vast majority of the persons participating in the event were males between the ages 18–24. The survey identified some impact from the event on the interest to apply for the next police training, in Swedish language, at the Police University College in Finland.
