Tiivistelmä
This research started from a personal interest that transformed into an academic curiosity. The aim of this study was to gain new data on how high-level competitive Finnish players are affected by sleep, and hope-fully generate new data that can be further analyzed.
The study was targeted to players who were practicing or had participated in high-level of play in their relative games, with age group defined from eighteen to fifty-years-old. There were five chosen partici-pants. The chosen research method for the study was thematic analysis, conducted in the form of inter-views. The data was gathered from the interviews and analyzed.
The results were clear: almost all interviewees were living under, what is theoretically considered, the effects of sleep deprivation, as many of them slept under the recommended seven hours a day. Most of the interviewees reported more positive effects of sleep than negative, which could indicate that they were aware that they need more sleep.
It is evident that the players competing in esports are affected from sleep or lack of sleep as athletes in traditional sports are. However, the research raised more topics that could be explored more in depth such as lifestyle, work life, exercise and substitute usage. This left a basis for future studies, so that in the future this research could be expanded upon.
