Tiivistelmä
This research focuses on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with project management to determine what type of integration is possible and beneficial. It aims to demonstrate the direct effectiveness of AI across different Project Management (PM) knowledge areas and to prospectively envision the future role of AI in project management. A particular focus is on understanding the role of AI in automating management activities, decision-making, scope management, resource management, and risk management within project management.
The research method employed is a comprehensive literature review, which assesses the status of AI applications in project management. This systematic approach allows for the exploration of research questions related to the future role of AI in project management and the interactions between AI systems and human project managers. Furthermore, the study re-examines the "Authoritative Study on the Near Future Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Project Management Knowledge Areas" by Fridgeirsson et al. (2021), with a specific focus on project integration and scope management.
The study reveals that AI has the potential to significantly contribute to the automation of various project management activities, particularly in areas such as decision-making, scope management, and integration management. However, it also identifies gaps in the current understanding of AI's impact on these areas, highlighting the need for further empirical research. The study underscores the importance of key personal skills, such as leadership, communication, and decision-making in an AI-driven environment, suggesting that AI should be seen as a tool to complement, rather than compete with, the expertise of human project managers. Additionally, the research calls for further exploration of ethical concerns, the development of AI-powered project management frameworks, and the impact of AI on project teams.
