Tiivistelmä
Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is already at pandemic proportions being the 5th leading cause of death worldwide. The global prevalence continues to rise due to obesity, unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle and age. At the same time many countries are suffering from shortage of medical workforce increasing the value of self-care. Previous studies as Diabetes Prevention Study, DEHKO and VESOTE showed the benefits of lifestyle changes in diabetes control. My aim was to show with a scoping review the effects of the nursing team in self-management education in Diabetes Mellitus type 2. I managed to find 7 articles using EBSCO Academic Search Elite, CINAHL, Pubmed and Medline searches by using set of keywords. 140 researches were collected and seven were selected that best answered my study question. The studies showed that knowledge provided by nurses improved self-care and self-management. Better self-care improved diabetes control by improved diet, increase in exercise, weight loss and better adherence to medication leading to an improved HbA1c. These changes improved quality of life and were expected to reduce complications caused by diabetes.
