In the context of European nuclear projects, ensuring safety standards and regulatory compliance is paramount for sustainable development. Challenges such as construction delays, regulatory complexities, and technical limitations have significant implications for project outcomes and financial stability. This study aimed to analyze and understand the common challenges faced by European nuclear projects in civil design management. The primary objectives were to identify key factors influencing safety and efficiency, explore best practices for mitigating challenges, and provide insights for enhancing project performance. A comprehensive comparative analysis of European nuclear projects completed or ongoing after 2020 was conducted. The methodology included in-depth case studies, literature reviews, and systematic analyses of nuclear regulatory reports and announcements. Qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques were employed to examine safety protocols, regulatory compliance measures, stakeholder engagement practices, and technological innovations. The comparative analysis revealed common challenges, including construction delays, cost overruns, regulatory hurdles, technical inconsistencies, and stakeholder engagement issues. Insights from case studies highlighted proactive risk management, transparent communication, continuous improvement initiatives, and technological innovations as crucial factors for enhancing safety and efficiency in civil design management. Addressing challenges in European nuclear projects requires a holistic approach integrating safety, regulatory compliance, and project efficiency considerations. By implementing best practices identified in this study, nuclear projects can optimize performance, ensure financial viability, and contribute to the sustainable advancement of nuclear energy initiatives.
