Family members of patients who are admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) are under great stress. Previous studies revealed that some families have physical and psychological symptoms even after patients’ ICUs. The focus on patient families in ICUs is relatively new, and there is still room for further research on how to support them efficiently and effectively.
The purpose of the thesis is to reveal how technologies can support family members of patients who are admitted to intensive care units. The objective is to deepen knowledge of the realities of family nursing interventions by applying technology in intensive care units. The research questions are as follows: 1) what kinds of interventions have been done in intensive care units so far? 2) what kinds of advantages and challenges are there surrounding technological applications?
Seven databases are used to gather articles regarding ICU family care and support interventions. In total, 49 articles are found and categorised into eight groups. One of the categories is about technology, which produced eight articles in a short time, despite being the latest of the eight categories to be started writing. Therefore, this thesis put its focus on family nursing from the aspect of technological application. Inductive content analysis is performed on nine articles.
The three main themes are family-patient relationships, family members’ emotions, and strengths and barriers or challenges, respectively. Although technologies are convenient and help maintain family function, some challenges exist, such as further psychological stress and difficulty in their use.
It is necessary to establish an environment that is convenient, accessible, and safe for all to avoid healthcare disparities. Healthcare professionals must consider the usage of technologies to provide medical and nursing care equally to patients and their loved ones.
