At the SSAB Europe Oy's Hämeenlinna plant, 500 capacity leveling coils travel annually against the normal material flow during the annual maintenance of the coating line and cold rolling mill. The coils arrive by train to Hämeenlinna and need to be received on the factory's dispatch area tracks due to maintenance activities in the coating hall. The capacity leveling coils maintain production on the galvanizing lines, which are outside of the maintenance scope. The goal was to find the least disruptive alternative for receiving, handling, and transporting the coils to subsequent processes, and to provide the keys to create a unified operating place for coil processing at the Hämeenlinna plant. The thesis was conducted as action research. Research material was collected through observation and interviews, as well as utilizing data from the inventory management system. As a result, a location for capacity leveling coils was found for the client, where the coils can be received, temporarily stored, unloaded, and moved to the next phase of the process. The work had to take into ac-count that the reception does not cause disruption to other factory operations, waste handling at the unloading site, and identify possible bottlenecks.
