Tiivistelmä
This thesis delves into the influence of placemaking and explores how it positively affects community development through local events. As someone who organizes events at this intersection, the study investigates why certain places evoke a sense of belonging and pride, among communities. Focusing on events in Helsinki the research examines the principles and practices of placemaking by drawing on four foundational theories.
The study adopts a research approach and utilizes case studies of two festivals; Drifts Festival and Baltic Circle. Drifts, an art platform that moves around exemplifies inclusivity and diversity in its structure and collaborations. The festival's dedication to community-driven initiatives and genuine partnerships highlights its commitment to growth and organic development. Baltic Circle, a theatre and performance festival emphasizes community-based participation and inclusivity through its open-call practice that highlights the wealth of local talent while fostering a sense of community ownership.
The key findings highlight the importance of programming that's inclusive in nature. Baltic Circles initiatives actively challenge norms by featuring artists, with disabilities. Both festivals contribute to creating quality spaces that enhance community well-being, happiness, and cultural abundance.
