Villiyrttikierros suunniteltiin toteutettavaksi alkukeväästä syksyyn, jolloin villiyrttejä on parhaiten saatavissa. The aim of this practice-based thesis was to create a wild herbs hiking tour, where customers can actively participate in the experience of learning about the selected wild herbs through both factual information as well as interesting historical and mythological stories. The objective of this thesis was to gain expertise in common wild herbs involving recognition, uses, health benefits, history, and mythology. The second objective was to find an interesting and useful way to share this information with customers so that they are able to use wild herbs confidently and receive health and other benefits from them.
The theoretical framework of the thesis comprises with wellness tourism, experience and transformation tourism, definition of wild herbs, historical uses and health benefits, and safe handling of wild herbs. The service product development process was approached using two main models.
In the practice-based part of the thesis, Verhelä & Lackman's and Komppula & Boxberg's model was used where applicable. The result of this thesis was the wild herbs tour guide’s handbook, which presents several common wild herbs, their properties, edible parts, health benefits, historical uses, mythology, and other important information. The handbook includes a safety plan and a risk analysis. The target group was adults interested in wild herbs, nutrition and wellbeing without serious physical limitations that would prevent them from moving freely in a forest.
The wild herb tour was planned to take place from early spring to mid-autumn when wild herbs are available in abundance. Due to the tight schedule, the testing of the product was delayed until the end of autumn, when many wild herbs could no longer be found. The tour was only conducted with a small test group and feedback was collected through an open discussion. Commercializing the product would require a more accurate cost-profit analysis and marketing plan, as well as testing during the planned season.
