Opinnäytetyö on määrällinen tutkimus. The physical fitness of Finnish conscripts has been decreasing for a long time. The Finnish Defence Forces have developed the MarsMars mobile application to respond to the decreasing fitness level. The purpose of this thesis was to find the possible effects of the application on the conscript’s physical fitness and body composition. In addition, the study investigated what the conscripts thought about using the application and how many conscripts used the mobile application. For the study, the Finnish Defence Forces provided the survey data, which included the responses of over 3,000 Finnish conscripts. The surveys were taken during conscript service, and they had two surveys, at the beginning and in the end of the service. The survey data also contained the results of conscript’s fitness tests from the beginning and the end of service. The survey data also contained the information on the conscript’s body composition. The data was collected from three consecutive arrivals of the conscripts. In the thesis, the given data was analyzed, and the research problem was answered based on the results. The thesis is a quantitative study. The study compared the survey responses and fitness test results of conscripts who had used the application to conscripts who had not used application. The results showed that the conscripts who used the application had weaker fitness test results in the beginning of their military service, but at the end of their service their results were at the same level as those who had not used the application. Users of the application achieved greater improvement in fitness test results between start of service and end of service compared to non-users. Among the men, there was little to no difference in changes in body composition measurement results between the users and non-users of the app. Among the women, the nonusers had an increase in body weight, waist circumference and body mass index, while users of the application experienced a decrease in weight and waist circumference. Conscripts who used the application felt themselves to be less physically ready for the military service compared to non-users. The users of the application found the app easy to use, but only 10 % of the users of the application found it useful for improving fitness. Further studies are needed to know exactly how much the use of the application affects the physical condition of conscripts. The application should be developed in such a way that the users would consider it more useful and meaningful. More attention should be paid to the advertising of the application in the future.
