In Finland, we have laws and regulations that are the basis for the home visits made by the maternity and child clinic in connection with a new family member. A nurse can come on home visit already during pregnancy or after delivery when the baby is about one week old. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the mothers´ experiences of the home visit in connection with a new family member and to map their development proposals. The study's questions are "How is the home visit experienced in connection with a new family member?" and "How can the home visit develop according to the mothers?". Theoretical starting point is Dorothea Orem´s theory of selfcare.
A survey was conducted in the Facebook group “Mammor & Gravida i Österbotten FINLAND” (translated: Mothers & Pregnant being in Ostrobothnia FINLAND). The 36 mothers that responded had all received a home visit after childbirth and the results show that most mothers have a positive experience of the home visit. The home visitor's professional knowledge and the experience of encounter were usually the factors that influenced the experience positively or negatively. The practical importance of not having to go to the child clinic with a newborn was especially appreciated. The development proposals that were mainly mentioned concerned the design of the home visits and the practical implementation during the home visits. For example, a wish for more time during the home visits, several home visits and that it would be the same person that the woman encounter throughout the process (during the entire pregnancy until the baby is born).
This study has appeared that home visits are mainly perceived as positive in Ostrobothnia. The development proposals that have come can help the home visitors in their future work.
