Threats and violence aimed at workers are common occurrences in healthcare, and psychiatry is a particularly vulnerable field. Threats and violence should not exist, yet it affects many.
The aim of the study was to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of threats and violence that psychiatry personnel are exposed to, how they deal with the events that occurred and what they do to prevent future events. First, there is a discussion on the theory of what threats and violence mean. Then follows a description of the workplace, causes of aggression and why the aggression occurs, conflict management and the prevention of threats and violence.
The thesis is a quantitative study using questionnaires as a method of data collection. As a theoretical starting point, Sarvimäki and Stenbock-Hult’s (2010) theory of the caregiver as ethical and vulnerable has been used as a theoretical starting point.
The results showed that threats and violence against staff in psychiatry are common. The most common type of threats and violence is in the form of psychological violence through shouting and profanities. The staff handles the events that have occurred by, for example, discussing and participating in MAPA training. Communication, experienced personnel and alarm systems are the most important steps in preventing threats and violence.
