The purpose of this study was to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of how people with disabilities are treated by health professionals who take place outside the accommodation. I have worked in the field before and felt that there were shortcomings, so through the thesis I want to find out if there are shortcomings in the response and any tips on development opportunities that the staff wants.
A qualitative interview study has been conducted with staff working in homes where people with disabilities live. Three volunteers who have worked for a long time was interviewed. I have used two questions in my work that I wanted to get answers to through the interviews. The questions: How are people with disabilities treated by health professionals who take place outside the accommodation? What development needs are there for the treatment of people with disabilities in the care that takes place outside the home? From the interview answers I received; a content analysis was made. As a theoretical starting point, Ida Jean Orlando's theory, the theory of reflective nursing process (1961) was chosen.
From the results of the interviews, it is clear that there are still shortcomings in the treatment of different patient groups. What was also mentioned in the interviews is that schools have cut down on the subject of disability. However, there was also mention of insecurity among health professionals when they have not dealt with people with disabilities many times before and they are afraid to make mistakes. Here, as a health professional, it is important to take the personal carer or relatives into the care and ask them, as they know how the person reacts and knows the person best.
