The aim of this thesis was to compose a guidebook for riding school students on how to prepare themselves prior to riding lessons to meet the physical and psychological demands of a horseback riding lesson. Horseback riders’ physical condition has been shown to be average or below average and engagement in auxiliary training has not typically been a part of the riding culture. The idea for physical preparation was brought up by the entrepreneur of a riding school, Titta Peltonen from Ratsastuskoulu Zilpa. According to her many riding school students feel that a 60-minute riding lesson is not long enough as it takes time for their bodies to warm-up. The guidebook on warming up aimed to alleviate the contradiction of limited duration for riding lessons, while riding school students themselves feel they would need more time to be physically able to practice and learn horseback riding sports specific skills.
The background research on horseback riders’ optimal warm-up was formulated by reviewing scientific evidence from equine and other sports physiology publications, as well as professional magazines and expert views. The information search focused on physical components the sport requires from the horseback rider, in different disciplines under horseback riding. Due to the fact that research on the topic is scarce and that the quality of the research papers was not evaluated, some evidence was backed up with expert opinions.
The factors of horseback riders’ physiological requirements which the reviewed research examined and often concluded as fundamental for good horseback riding, were chosen as the main aspects that were addressed in the guidebook exercises as well. According to research and literature they are balance, core activation, pelvic stability, mobility, and symmetry and breathing and mindfulness techniques. The guidebook contains ten exercises, which can be chosen and executed according to the horseback rider’s preference.
