This study was related to the activities and functional capacity of the elderly people. The aim of thesis was to find out benefits concerning keeping an active lifestyle when people are becoming older as well as to identify suitable activities for the elderly people in order to support and maintain their functional capacity as long as possible The literature review was used as the method in this research. 27 articles were selected through the search from CIHNAL, Academic Elite and MEDLINE database. They all are published studies in International Nursing Journals. The data was processed by content analysis. The results of this study included various activities like walking, mountain climbing, swimming, petting, reading, Qi-kung and yoga in order to support and maintain the functional capacity of elderly people. According results, these activities can improve wellbeing of the elderly people and provide information for health care workers concerning methods for improving health of the elderly people.
As a result of this study, physical, leisure and social activities support and maintain the functional capacity for the elderly people. The result can be used by health care organizations to improve their services for elderly people in order to maintain their functional capacity.
