In terms of the development of motor skills, the early years are the most important time. Through movement and activity, the child increases awareness of their own body and learns to control their movements. Sufficient motor skills enable the child to participate in games that are typical for age and development level. The increased passivity and inactive lifestyle in the population is also reflected in the general weakening of children’s motor skills. On the other hand, weak motor skills lead to inactivity and reduce movement.
The purpose of this thesis is to increase the awareness of preschool teachers and instructors about practicing children’s motor skills in preschool. At the same time, a means was creating to increase the activity of preschool days and prevent the emergence of a passive lifestyle in preschool age (children aged 5-7 in Finland).
The aim of this thesis was to produce a guide that was created using already existing research information and studies. The work was carried out in cooperation with the children and staff (teachers and nannies) of the preschool in Tampere. They will be anonymous in this thesis, as the guide was created to be used by any preschool.
The method of implementation of the work was a functional thesis, the result of which was a guide for the development of motor skills of 5-7-year-olds in a preschool environment. The result of the work was a concrete tool to support the development of motor skills in preschool environment. In this way, an activity created from a physiotherapeutic point of view, appropriate and age-appropriate for developing motor skills was brought into preschool everyday life.
In the exercises and games of the guide, the skill level according to the age group has been considered, dividing the exercises into difficulty levels 1-3. All exercises and games contain specific movements that practice certain motor skills.
Websites intended for health professionals, exercise database and literature have been used for the ideation of the exercised. The guide was piloted at a cooperative preschool and the result was finalized based on the feedback received.
