In 2010, Suomen toimintaterapeuttiliitto, the Finnish organization of occupational
therapists, published a recommendation that guides occupational therapists through a process for client assessment. In occupational therapy the assessment should always be client-and family-centered. Also it should be part of the complete assessment made by a multi-professional group working with the client. When an occupational therapist is
assessing the need for rehabilitation and taking a family’s opinion into account, the treatment’s goals can be better drafted from the viewpoint of the family and children. This way the assessment and intervention can be designed to focus on the issues that the family deems important. The evidence-based practice for work encourages occupational therapists to use theory and criteria for the basis of structure assessment methods. These methods can improve the reliability of the assessment and the implamentation of the treatment.
The goal of our thesis was to plan and to organize a seminar for the occupational therap-ists in the Oulu region. The seminar was about client and occupational centered
assessment methods that enable family participation in the planning of the assessment and intervention within occupational therapy. Our functional goal was to have the
participating occupational therapists contribute actively during the seminar and take into account the guidelines for assessment and client interaction set by Suomen toimintate-rapeuttiliitto.
The seminar contained a lecture and a functional session. The lecture was about
occupational centered assessment, good assessment and rehabilitation practices, family and client centered and multi-professional approach. We introduced PEGS-, COPM- and SCOPE-assessment methods and their affecting background theories connected to the ICF-classification. In the functional session of the seminar the participating
occupational therapists familiarized themselves with the chosen methods and evaluated the methods’ utility within their own work. We received positive feedback from the
seminar. According to the feedback we had well met our quality criteria for the seminar. Our quality criteria were customer orientation, functionality, reliability and aesthetics.
