BACKGROUND. This study is needed because the physical workload of radiographers has changed during the last years due to the development of the imaging modalities. The study was commissioned by the radiology department of Raahe District Hospital.
AIM. The objective of this study was to describe the physical workload of the radiographers working with two different imaging modalities, computer radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR). The purpose was also to show how the working environment affected the workload of radiographers.
METHODS. This study was a qualitative case study and the material was gathered by observation. Two different x-ray examinations were recorded on a video and the observation was made by watching those videos. The viewpoint of this study was physical ergonomics and how it became apparent at radiographers´ work.
RESULTS: The results of the study showed that the workload of radiographers did not differ between two imaging modalities significantly. However, because of the better automation of the DR, the physical workload of radiographers was reduced. The results also revealed that the location of the equipment and the careful planning of the working environment played an important role in reducing work-related strain on the upper limbs and shoulders.
