Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this study was to describe the perception of the euthanasia practice on nurses as well as learn more about euthanasia by systematic literature review. The results of this research could therefore be used to develop nurses' awareness and improve their knowledge on this topic.
The systematic literature review was identified with the use databases such as OVID, EBRARY CINAHL and Science Direct journals. Articles were also searched for from scientific based national websites. Overall, 48 relevant articles were analyzed with content analysis. The time range of these articles was limited from 1999 till 2014.
In conclusion, euthanasia and perception of nurses can be influenced by ethics, professional experiences, religion and the age of the nurses. This type of influences form the attitudes that nurses have towards this subject. However, it was most importantly reported that all nurses base with their perceptions on each case differently as all patients had their own unique complexities. Nevertheless, most nurses understood the laws on the subject of euthanasia and were more likely to follow the guidelines offered by the legislation. However, more studies should be carried out before, if or when euthanasia is legalized. Most nurses tended to be conservative towards the practice and fear that their roles in euthanasia might affect their work ethics and beliefs.
