Tiivistelmä
Forests are an essential part of our global environment. Changes in tree volume provide an indicator of the health of the forest ecosystem. A decrease in tree volume may indicate that the forest is in decline or that its ability to store carbon and other resources is diminishing. The study was conducted in Raseborg municipality situated on Finland's southwest coast and typically known for its forests, which cover over 70% of the land. The goal of this research is to study changes in tree volume in forest areas of Raseborg between 2009 and 2019 and to evaluate opinions of local inhabitants about such changes. For this, I used two different approaches which include objective data obtained from the National Forest Inventory data provided by the National Resources Institute (Luke) and by sending out an online survey regarding potential changes in forest cover and forestry policies to local inhabitants. The result shows that there is not much decline in tree volume and the inhabitant didn’t see any change in forest either. The respondents evaluated the current state of the forest in Raseborg (in close vicinity to the area what they pointed out on the map) by using a 0-10 scale. As a result, most of the respondents over (30%) evaluated forest management in the municipality with high marks (8 – 10) attested that the forest was very good to excellently managed. The results suggest that the current forest management strategies are working in Raseborg.
