The thesis explores aesthetic development in early childhood education and care, focusing on its impact and various experiences for young children. The portfolio method is used to document children's aesthetic skills and understanding. The theoretical framework draws from philosophy, psychology, and the arts, incorporating influential theorists such as Dewey, Gardner, Vygotsky, and Piaget. The Finnish National core curriculum for ECEC 2022 serves as a guide for understanding how children’s aesthetic development can be supported.
Our findings demonstrate that aesthetic development nurtures children's creativity, imagination, and appreciation for art, music, and beauty. And that educators require a strong foundation in art, music, and child development, as well as effective pedagogical approaches to support this development. We agree that the effectiveness of aesthetic education lies in the interconnected use of various means, including games, drawing, theatre, art, speech, and music.
We advocate for continuous professional development for ECEC professionals, emphasizing training on the latest education trends. Additionally, we recommend including aesthetics learning as a goal in the Finnish National Core Curriculum for ECEC, along with providing educators the necessary tools to support children's aesthetic learning and development.
