Tiivistelmä
Due to global ecological concerns such as global warming and loss of habitats, more and more companies are looking to implement environmental management systems (EMS) and other sustainable office trends. This thesis discusses sustainable office trends via a survey and study which was conducted at a Finnish digital design agency. It was conducted using a survey of it’s employees and general company information acquired such as power data and building information.
The aim of the thesis is to use J&CO as a model to model how other small and medium digital firms could operate more sustainably. J&CO is digital design agency in Ekenas Finland. It will analyze material usage, commuting, and green coding. The result is a road map for other small and medium digital companies to follow. Data was gathered using an employee survey to gather information about people’s habits and work styles to determine the company’s sustainability levels.
The end results show that commuting and coffee are the largest contributors. However, due to them having a “green power contract” it is unclear what their effect is. It is difficult to directly compare planting trees and direct carbon offsets at best. Lastly it was found that for a small to medium digital agency, the effects of green coding are minimal however, the service you use for one’s server could help overall.
