Tiivistelmä
The goal of this thesis is to investigate the role of business analytics in decision-making. To find potential challenges with using business analytics programs in modern business, and to research what set of skills a future Business Analyst should have.
In the first part of the thesis, a historical overview and key terms are outlined. The results from the theoretical part of this thesis show that the market of business analytics will grow in the near future and demand for skilled professionals will be high.
The thesis research is based on the hypothetico-deductive method when in the beginning author gathers statistical findings and insights from industry leaders and derives hypotheses to test. The hypotheses are then tested by gathering and analyzing primary research data and the theory is then either supported or refuted by the results.
The thesis focused on the investigation of organizations’ best practices in using business analytic programs in their daily business operations and in decision-making. The author also researched the value of insight provided by Business Intelligence (BI) in comparison to a human factor.
As part of the research, interviews were conducted with 10 professionals, who work in the field of data analytics and business analytics. The predominant number of respondents agreed that there is a high demand for skilled professionals in the field of analytics.
Findings showed that there is a need for changes in corporate culture towards self-service analytical tools for employees and wider access to data analytics across organizations.
The thesis research outcome shows that Finnish companies have a very high level of support for data democratization. Potentially Finland may become a leader in corporate data access and transparency.
