In healthcare, producing quality data is important from the perspective of patients care, and also data secondary use. According to uniform guidelines, data provided can be utilized for research, registers, statistics and data-driven management.
The purpose of this study is to produce a process description of healthcare record entries and data production in a wellbeing services county. The aim was to use the process description to increase awareness among healthcare professionals on the significance of consistent data production and the effects of the produced data on the wellbeing services county and the national level.
The study was carried out as a research-based development project. The action research approach was used. The wellbeing services county was the partner of this study. The theoretical basis of this study was built on defining the concepts of the secondary use of data, healthcare data structures, data-driven management, data management and data production as well as the connections between the concepts. The data were collected using theme interviews aimed at experts and a workshop utilising a dialogical approach. The data were analysed by forming themes.
The results of this study emphasised the meaning of the organisation of data management, the challenges of data production, the impacts of data produced by healthcare professionals and the data with significance from the perspective of secondary use. Theoretical information and the study results were used as the basis for creating a process description of making healthcare record entries and data production as well as flow charts that describe the process. In conclusion are that there is a need for increasing the understanding of healthcare professionals in the secondary use of data and improving the efficacy of the instructions given on data production. A suggestion for further development provided in this study was to improve the efficiency of the orientation provided to healthcare professionals on the significance of the secondary use of produced data.
