The purpose of this thesis was to survey the opinions of forest owners and if they are interested in voluntary protection of forests? Why, why not? What would make them interested? How aware are they of the opportunities to voluntary protect forests and is there a need for more marketing regarding the subject?
In this thesis, it will be highlighted why the conservation of forests is important and various programs related to the subject will be presented.
The answers in this degree thesis were collected in connection with a marketing campaign regarding voluntary forest conservation that was done in collaboration with the Southern Ostrobothnia ELY-Center and the Finnish Forestry Centre. The campaign was aimed at forest owners with forest that belong to supplementary proposals for the peatland protection program (shortening SSTE).
Of those I interviewed, 60 % were not interested, 23 % were considering and 17 % were interested. Environmental value was the main reason for most people who had a positive or neutral attitude. Based on the results, it could be concluded that Natura 2000 has left deep traces along the Ostrobothnian coast and negatively affects the opinions of the forest owners. Many feel they can’t trust the government anymore and everything about forest conservation is repulsive. Also, the compensation grounds for, in this case mainly sparsely wooded peatlands, was one of the most common reasons there was no interest in protection.
Although this is a very current topic, there were large gaps in how much the forest owners know about voluntary forest protection, there is absolutely room for more marketing for both forest owners and actors in the forest industry.
