The purpose of this thesis was to study the experiences of young immigrants regarding inclusion and participation in the new society, and to describe the factors contributing to these experiences. For labor immigrants arriving in Finland there is currently no automatic societal orientation provided, unlike for refugees who receive guidance and information about public and integration services. We want to describe the effect of this on children growing up in labor migrant families. During childhood and adolescence, we form our identity and self-image, which gets influenced by culture, environment, and society, affecting how we perceive ourselves, our participation, influence, and importance. The central questions for this thesis are: What is participation? How do children of labor migrants experience inclusion and participation in the new society? Are there factors that can contribute to strengthening or hindering the experience of being included?
Our target group is young people whose parents have chosen to move to Finland from abroad as labor migrants. We have used qualitative interviews with young people who have lived in Finland for five years or longer. The reason for this selection is that they have had sufficient time to form opinions and gain experience regarding how they view their own participation in society, having lived with two different cultures for a longer period. We want to describe how their perception of how their upbringing has affected their own identity and participation. In the interviews, the respondents also describe the personal strengths or challenges that they attribute to their upbringing, as well as the factors that have facilitated or hindered their experiences of participation.
In the interviews, respondents described their personal strengths and challenges that they believe stem from their upbringing. The strengths mentioned by the respondents include problem-solving, experience and knowledge, as well as the development of social skills, resilience, and self-confidence. The factors that have facilitated the experience of participation are language skills and supportive networks, as well as understanding of norms and social codes. The sense of participation was made difficult due to the parents' lack of language and societal orientation which resulted in the children carrying responsibility for their own schoolwork and leisure activities.
