The purpose of my degree project is to investigate how elderly patients experience treatment and want to be treated in healthcare, as well as how effective communication should look like. The study was done to increase understanding around the chosen theme and to get answers to what could be improved in healthcare when it comes to elderly.
As a theoretical starting point, I chose person-centered care as well as evidence in care and nursing that is based on respect, relationship, commitment, communication, empathy, holistic focus, coordinated care, individualized focus, and shared decision-making. Here, the person must be seen as a person and not as a diagnosis.
The data collection method used is a qualitative interview study, where a total of för elderly patients in healthcare were interviewed, all of whom had their own priorities and mindsets regarding treatment and communication in healthcare.
The results showed both positive and negative experiences, but in every case, it emerged that respect, friendliness, eye contact, a good tone of voice and the right first impression are the keys to good treatment and communication.
