This thesis exercise was given to me by a contact who lives in Sweden. He was wondering if it is a good idea to start his own small-scale 3D-printing company as a side business. The company would sell different kinds of 3D-printed products to a fair price with the private customer as the primary target group. To answer questions regarding this subject, research was done regarding the steps that needed to be done to start your own company in Sweden and how other similar companies are doing in terms of production and marketing.
Research started with a comparison of other companies to figure out how they are marketing their products and they were sorted based on which their primary customer targets are. Also, part of the research was to find out what is needed in order to start your own company in Sweden, what the requirements are and what kind of corporate form would be best suited for the kind of business.
The next part was to conclude which kind of printer would be a good investment and what kind of material that would be optimal to use. In order to do this research into 3D-printing as a while was done.
The last part of the research was based on licenses, in other words what you are allowed and not allowed to do with 3D models which aren't your own. It’s illegal to take a Mario model, print it and sell it. However, if the model is sent to you by a customer who asks you to print it out, that is fully legal as you are not selling or marketing the model, you are only selling the service you provide to print out a model.
The conclusion is that there is potential and a lot of different opportunities to start a small scaled 3D-printing business. There is also a lot of room to experiment to try and find a new way to reach the desired target group. It will however not be an easy task to do so and it will also be next to impossible to work with industries due to the hardware limitations that a small-scale business will face.
