The topic of the thesis was the experiences of inclusion of children and young people with neuropsychiatric symptoms. The purpose of the thesis was to conduct a literature review to find out more about the experiences of inclusion of children and young people with neuropsychiatric symptoms. The aim of the thesis was to provide the commissioner with researched information on the subject for the evaluation of the TUKEE2 project.
The research questions of the thesis were "What kind of inclusion do children and young people with neuropsychiatric symptoms experience?" and "How to promote the inclusion of children and young people with neuropsychiatric symptoms?" The research method used in the thesis was a systematic literature review. Seven studies were selected for the literature review, of which three were review articles, three were Pro-graduate/master’s theses, one was a thesis of a master’s degree student, and one was a scoping review.
As a result of the literature review, the experiences of inclusion of children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric symptoms appeared to be rather negative. The holistic nature of neuropsychiatric disorders and the fragmented nature of the service system do not seem to fit together, and the service system seems to lack a holistic approach. Important aspects for the realization of inclusion and helping families with neuropsychiatric disorders were encounter, participation, the importance of identifying and raising awareness of neuropsychiatric challenges, and the functioning of the service system.
The results of this literature review are not generalizable. However, although it is not possible to obtain a generalizable view, I think it is necessary to develop approaches that genuinely put the involvement of families, children, and young people at the forefront.
