Tiivistelmä
The thesis titled "Deck Officer and Safety Instructor" aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Tallink Training Center, which was established in 2015 with the goal of reducing crew training costs and increasing crew confidence by providing STCW courses for their own personnel. The thesis had two primary aims: to determine if the training center met the company's goals and Estonian legislation requirements, and to identify the advantages of being a training center safety instructor and navigational officer on board a ship together with crew trained in the training center. To achieve these aims, personal interviews were conducted with the training center project manager and three crew members with experience in STCW courses at different training centers. The research questions were divided into two sections, aimed at identifying the main obstacles to setting up the training center, improving the center, and enhancing safety onboard. The research findings helped determine the effectiveness of the Tallink Training Center and identified ways to improve it in line with the company's goals and Estonian legislation requirements. The study concluded that the training center was effective in meeting the company's goals and Estonian legislation requirements, and it was beneficial for the crew members to be trained in the center. The advantages of being a training center safety instructor and navigational officer on board a ship together with the crew trained in the center were identified, including improved communication, teamwork, and safety onboard. The research findings were expected to be useful for the company to improve the training center's effectiveness and achieve better results in the future.
