Harmonization of Tank Instructions for Base Solutions

Abstract

This thesis was made for and with a mechanical department for an international corporation operating in several industries. Past experiences showed that the existing instructions for constructing welded storage tanks according to applicable standards are inadequate, and therefore both the template for placing an order correctly and instructions for constructing needed an overhaul and improvements.

This thesis explains the process of finding a solution to a long-standing problem through qualitative research. It explains the theory behind ordering and constructing welded storage tanks, and what important factors should be considered while doing this. The current way of working is presented, together with the standardized way. These together form the new instructions.

The methods for interviewing significant stakeholders are presented, and what the outcome was. How personal opinions differ from factual statements and how the instructions were built based on these. The instructions act as a memory aid both at the office and in the field. This is to create a more efficient way of working while avoiding problems with adequate instructions.

Detta examensarbete gjordes för en mekanisk avdelning på ett internationellt företag som verkar inom flera branscher. Tidigare erfarenheter har visat att de befintliga instruktionerna för att konstruera svetsade lagringstankar enligt standard varit otillräckliga och därför behövde de praktiska arbetsinstruktionerna överses och uppdateras. Utöver detta behövdes en mall för hur en beställning läggs korrekt.

Detta dokument förklarar processen för att hitta en lösning på ett långvarigt problem genom kvalitativ forskning. Den förklarar teorin bakom hur lagringstankar beställs och konstrueras, samt vilka faktorer som bör beaktas under processen. Det standardiserade sättet presenteras tillsammans med nuvarande sättet att utföra arbeten. Dessa två utgör resultatet för instruktionerna.

Metoderna för intervjuerna presenteras beroende på personens position i förhållande till ämnet. Hur personliga åsikter skiljes från fakta och hur instruktionerna byggdes upp baserat på dessa intervjuer. Instruktionerna kommer agera stöd både på fältet där praktiska arbeten utförs och på kontoret för teoretiskt arbete. Dessa skapar tillsammans en effektivare vardag samtidigt som problemsituationer undvikes med tillräckliga instruktioner.
