6-8% of all fertile women suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS. PCOS is a metabolic syndrome that entails that the women have elevated levels of male sex hormones and as a consequence of this the women’s ovaries are often covered with small cysts. Common symptoms of PCOS are amenorrhea, anovulation, hirsutism, acne, overweight and infertility.
The aim of this study was to describe women’s experiences of living with PCOS and thereby increase midwives’ and other nursing staff’s knowledge and understanding of women’s experiences of living with the syndrome. The question was: “How do women experience living with PCOS?”.
The study was done in a qualitative way and the data was collected from four different blogs. Katie Eriksson’s theory of suffering was used as the theoretical framework. The result of the study was analyzed inductively through a qualitative content analysis. The result was compared to previous research and the theoretical framework in the result discussion chapter.
The result showed that women with PCOS suffered in various ways. The women experienced physical, mental, and social suffering. An example of the physical suffering was severe period cramps and pain from the lower abdomen, which affected the women’s daily life negatively. The women’s mental life and their emotions was described as a rollercoaster, the feeling of not being a normal woman because of the diagnosis affected the women’s self-image negatively. All four women suffered from infertility because of their diagnosis, this affected the social relations negatively, for instance when other people announced their pregnancy.
The women felt that the information they got from the nursing staff when they got diagnosed was inadequate, which made the women feel left alone with an unfamiliar diagnosis. For the women to feel safe, it was important to feel that the nursing staff wanted what was best for them and listened to them.
