The aim of the thesis is to investigate the professional support given to children who have lost a parent. The purpose is also to find out if the professionals who meet these children themselves feel that they have enough knowledge to be able to support the children in all the various parts of the grief. The professionals who answered these questions work within the school, the parish's child and family activities and the child protection aftercare.
The theory covers various stages of the grieving process in children who have lost a parent and how you as a relative can support and be there for this child. It also covers what a relative should not say or do after a child has lost a parent, as well as a description of resilience - how children can cope even if they have gone through something as traumatic as losing a parent. In the theory part you can read about the professionals several types of support and what different types of support services are available.
The research is a qualitative study that was conducted in the form of interviews by four professionals who all work in Ostrobothnia. It emerged in the survey that half of those who meet these children consider themselves to have enough knowledge to be able to support them, while the other half felt that they could gain more knowledge about the subject. All respondents agreed that the support could be developed and improved.
