The role of the coach plays quite a significant factor in an athlete’s development. Coaches educate their players and affect their psychosocial skills and self-esteem or self-image. Since not every player becomes a professional top athlete, it is important coaches understand their role of developing one as a person not necessarily as an athlete.
This research looked at the situation of a top ice hockey club in Hungary. The environment is well-established financially and well-equipped with staff members. The club has a full- time psychologist, two physiotherapists, two physical trainers, a dietician, a skills coach, and 6 team coaches. They have their own ice rink, gym, and track and field court all in one place.
In July 2021 the club got the ‘Academy’ status meaning they became an exceptional club with four other organizations that the government funds annually. These four teams now compete to become the best environment for development possible before 2023 when a decision is coming and there are going to be two academies left. There are three age groups at the academy level: U16, U18, and U21. The goal of the club is to become the best-developing team in Hungary, allowing them to hold on to the ‘Academy’ status.
The goal of the following thesis is to create a mental skills training guide for the hockey team Újpesti Jégkorong Akadémia. The guide aims to be easily readable for coaches and players. Since Hungarian and import players play in this club, it was crucial to create this guide both in Hungarian and English.
The guide goes into detail about seven different mental skills, providing coaches basic knowledge about mental skills training. It is also a guide to help coaches realize the potential in Psychological Skills Training and help them become better coaches and educators for the players. The thesis mentions the gravity of psychological skills training in both skills acquisition and long-term athlete development.
The guide includes goal-setting and self-evaluation sheets, and useful questionnaires for both coaches and athletes at the club.
