Vietnam - a major player on agricultural goods export, came to sign a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union – one of the world’s biggest agricultural goods importers. The Agreement came into effect at a time when the global economy was rapidly changing and with lots of uncertainty. Exploring and understanding Vietnam’s competitive advantages in agricultural goods exports became an important objective to achieve if one wanted to understand the potential and significance of this trading partnership.
The method of choice was Document Analysis with its advantage of dealing with data in a wide variety of types, in both casual and formal forms. This method, being not strictly Qualitative oriented, worked well with analyzing documents that have numerical and text data. Sufficient data were collected by Document Analysis, then organized into Michael Porter’s Diamond model of National advantages to form critical insight into the subject. The Diamond model consisted of 4 main attributes and 2 additional influences which form an inter-supporting structure that can be used to assess Vietnam’s advantages in agricultural goods export to the EU.
Initially a number of concepts, such as international trade, Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the EU, Michael Porter’s Diamond model, were introduced. Later came data collection and analysis. The concept introduction was presented in a straight-forward and simple manner, supporting the readers in understanding the subject in discuss. Data collecting was done carefully by investigating several sources, including governmental websites, respectable press and journals, records of non-profit international organizations, etc. These data were then organized into Michael Porter’s Diamond model, which served as a framework.
Valuable conclusions were drawn from data analysis, and they could provide the readers with insights into the current situation of agricultural export of Vietnam to the EU. On the same token, possible competitive advantages of Vietnam on the matter were discussed, and final acknowledgement that the country had many things to work on and improve in order to achieve sustainable growth on agricultural goods export, specially to the EU market, with an active Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement in place.
