Tiivistelmä
This qualitative research aims at looking towards the delivery service provided by Wärtsilä known as ship supply. This study will look into the challenges faced by providing this service and look into possible solutions towards them. This is accomplished by looking at the available sources of information obtained from the training documents for handling ship supply deliveries and comparing that to the data obtained from the highly qualified respondents from the interviews conducted as part of the research for this thesis. This study will assist in visualizing the issues that are faced with ship supplies and with the solutions provided, will help fix the common issues such as improving the order-to-delivery cycle by improving the handling time. The author used the approach of semi-structured interviews in order to retrieve the necessary quality data from the selection between key users and delivery coordinators with the highest level of experience and expertise within the Global Distribution Department. The theory for the theoretical framework was retrieved from the Ship Supply Training documents which provides detailed information on the concept of the service and step by step process of the delivery system. Another aspect presented in the theoretical frame work is the 7R’s of Logistics which are the founding basic steps to maximize the efficiency of logistics.
With the use of qualitative research and the careful analysis of the gathered data, the challenges faced with ship supply services. This clearly showed a correlation amongst all the participants within the research. The research has indicated that the challenges faced with the ship supply service are culminated in four main aspects of the protocol; communication between the delivery coordinators and the PCM team, unclosed export declarations, incorrect office of exit and incorrect tax classifications. As the challenges came into perspective the research proceeded to looking into the possible solutions in order to try to minimize the given issues at hand such as, offering clear guidelines of ship supply between all the teams that work with the service at a similar standard. Having the PCM confirming that the export declaration would be closed on time would give an assurance for the delivery coordinators to process the deliveries with no errors, an automation which would automatically pick out the correct office of exit and lastly retraining the department in regards to taxation.
